Saxicola stejnegeri

Also known as: Saxicola maurus stejnegeri
AviList (2026) treats this bird as a subspecies, Saxicola maurus stejnegeri, of the Siberian Stonechat (Saxicola maurus), which is also on this site. IOC lists it as a separate species.

Amur Stonechat (Saxicola stejnegeri) is a small upright chat with a dark head, pale neck patch and orange breast in the male, while females are mottled brown. Body shape, bill structure, plumage pattern and voice provide the strongest field characters. Age, sex and season may alter its appearance, so identification should combine several features and careful direct field comparisons with similar species in the same habitat (Wikipedia, general species account).

It breeds in eastern Asia in open scrub and grassland, watches from low exposed stems for insects and migrates south for winter; it was formerly grouped within the Siberian stonechat complex. Its movements and social behaviour vary through the year, with breeding birds generally more dispersed and non-breeding birds gathering where food is concentrated. The Korean vertebrate catalogue used for this guide records the species in South Korea (Wikipedia, general species account; Wildlife of Korea occurrence records).
