Turdus mupinensis
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Range
East Asia; primarily China
The Chinese thrush, Turdus mupinensis, is an East Asian member of the true-thrush family Turdidae. It was historically unusual enough in classification to be placed alone in the genus Otocichla, but molecular studies support inclusion within the diverse genus Turdus. Older references and databases may therefore use different generic combinations. The opened sources confirm the accepted species identity but provide limited diagnostic description, so no plumage measurements are invented here (general species account; molecular systematics of Turdus).
The species is associated primarily with China, and observations on the northeast Chinese coast show that at least some birds make seasonal movements. Its appearance in the Korean catalogue should therefore be supported by a documented record rather than treated as evidence of a widespread resident population. The accessible sources do not adequately establish Korean habitat, diet, breeding, clutch size or abundance, and these remain omitted. Separation from other spotted Asian thrushes requires current field-guide characters and, where possible, photographs or sound recordings (general species account).
