The crested lark is a compact brown lark, roughly comparable with a Eurasian skylark but shorter overall and bulkier through the head and body. It measures about seventeen centimetres and weighs thirty-seven to fifty-five grams. A short tail with pale-brown outer feathers and reddish underwings in flight are useful features. Its pointed crest is visible at all times but becomes especially prominent during song, territorial encounters and courtship. The sexes look alike, while young birds show more spotting across the back than adults. (Wikipedia, general species account)

This largely non-migratory species ranges broadly through Eurasia and northern Africa. The subspecies G. c. magna extends from central Iran and Turkmenistan eastward to southern central Asia and northwestern China, and south toward northwestern Pakistan. Its sedentary behaviour means movements beyond established breeding areas are generally limited. The species belongs to the open-country lark assemblage, and its earthy plumage suits dry ground. Similarity to the Thekla lark can complicate identification, but bill structure, streaking and underwing colour help separate the two where their ranges approach.
