Diet
Seeds, cones, fungi, buds and fruit
Habitat
Coniferous, mixed and deciduous woodland
Range
Across northern Eurasia, including North and South Korea
The Eurasian red squirrel is a slender tree squirrel with strong curved claws, long hind legs and a conspicuously bushy tail. Its coat varies widely from bright red through brown to nearly black, while the underparts remain white or cream. Ear tufts are especially noticeable in winter. It lacks the gliding membrane of a flying squirrel and spends much of its active time climbing and travelling through trees (Wikipedia, red squirrel account).
Active by day, this squirrel occupies coniferous, mixed and deciduous woodland. It feeds heavily on conifer seeds, nuts, fungi, buds and fruit, caches cones and nuts for later use, and shelters in tree cavities or rounded twig nests known as dreys. The timing of breeding changes with climate and food supply (Wikipedia, red squirrel account). Its documented range extends across northern Eurasia into both North and South Korea (Mammal Diversity Database v2.4).
