The rufous-bellied woodpecker, or rufous-bellied sapsucker, is 19–23 cm long. The male has a red crown and the female a black crown speckled with white. Both sexes have a black mantle and back and black wings barred white, and a black upper tail with some white barring on the outer feathers. The face is white and the throat and underparts are a uniform cinnamon or rufous (Wikipedia, general species account).
It occurs from the Himalaya through parts of South and Southeast Asia to Korea and Manchuria. Its brush-tipped tongue is adapted for feeding on sap, while insects also contribute to the diet. The species uses forest across a broad elevational and geographic range, although the opened account does not identify a dependable Korean viewing locality. The Korean vertebrate catalogue independently records it in South Korea (Wikipedia, general species account; Wildlife of Korea occurrence records).
