Crocidura shantungensis
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Range
Northeast Asia, including Korea
The Shantung white-toothed shrew, Crocidura shantungensis, is also called the Asian lesser white-toothed shrew. It belongs to Soricidae and to Crocidura, the exceptionally species-rich genus of white-toothed shrews. The accepted binomial distinguishes it from larger regional Crocidura and from red-toothed shrews of the genus Sorex. Reliable identification of these small mammals generally depends on documented measurements and dental or cranial characters rather than colour alone (Wikipedia, general species account; Mammal Diversity Database).
Species catalogues place the Shantung white-toothed shrew in Northeast Asia, including the Korean Peninsula. The opened general account confirms its identity but provides little verified species-level ecology. Accordingly, this profile does not assign a diet, breeding season, preferred microhabitat or body measurements by analogy with other white-toothed shrews. Korean observations require cautious identification because several superficially similar shrews occur in the region and older names or changing taxonomic treatments may complicate records (Wikipedia, general species account; Mammal Diversity Database).
